A rightwing Christian activist in North Carolina says a forthcoming Supreme Court decision to legalize same-gender marriage nationwide could lead to God’s destruction of the U.S., just like God destroyed Sodom.
Quoted by a “correspondent” for his own organization’s website on Jan. 16, Christian Action League of North Carolina Executive Director the Rev. Mark Creech asked his supporters to “fall on their knees” and beg God to spare the country:
“I firmly believe every Bible-believing, God-fearing, follower of Jesus Christ, should literally fall to his knees and pray at the hearing of this news. Sodom was destroyed, Nevertheless, [sic] the Bible reveals that God was willing to save Sodom for the sake of Abraham’s petitions. Perhaps God would be willing to hear our prayers for the salvation of marriage and our nation.”
— Mark Creech, as quoted Jan. 16
Creech added, “This momentous decision by the U.S. Supreme Court could either signal a forthcoming judgment or the Eternal Judge’s decision to spare us – to redeem us from our wicked ways. We should all repent of our own personal sins and earnestly seek the Lord.”
Creech failed to explain why God hadn’t yet wiped out the 36 U.S. states and the 18 nations around the globe which have already legalized gay marriage.
Creech and his group were outspoken supporters of North Carolina’s anti-LGBT marriage amendment, which was overturned in October. Same-gender marriages have been legal in the state since. Creech has also worked closely with rightwing activist Tami Fitzgerald, the executive director of the North Carolina Values Coalition, the group which led the push for the marriage amendment. Fitzgerald has a long career as a lobbyist for hate groups, including the state affiliate of the Family Research Council.
In December, Creech announced his group was $15,000 in debt, admitting that it “would be nothing less than a miracle for the Christian Action League to garner the necessary funds to clear out its debt before the beginning of the new fiscal year.”
At the time, churches and supporters didn’t seem too interested in helping out.
“Over and again, we have sent word to the churches of our need for financial assistance,” League Executive Director Dr. Mark Creech wrote in an email and post to his website. “Many have graciously responded. We’ve picked up some new donors. Nevertheless, as we approach the end of this year, we still find ourselves behind.”
LGBT advocates in North Carolina, meanwhile, are making headway across the state on a variety of LGBT-inclusive initiatives. And, they’re “confident” the upcoming Supreme Court hearing on gay marriage will result in affirmative decisions for LGBT couples.
“It’s clear that no valid legal arguments exist to uphold bans on same-sex marriage. For that reason we are confident the U.S. Supreme Court will rule that same-sex couples have a fundamental right to marry under the U.S. Constitution – no matter which of the 50 states or territories they reside in,” the Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, executive director of the Asheville-based Campaign for Southern Equality, said.

Anti-gay filth said the same thing in every single country that has legalized it so far. They are all still there. The story of Sodom was about inhospitality.
